The present agricultural scenario is a mix of outstanding achievements and missed opportunities. If India has to emerge as an economic power in the world, our agricultural productivity should equal those countries, which are currently rated as economic power of the world. We need a new and effective technology which can improve continuously the productivity, profitability, sustainability of our major farming systems. Today, Increasing production in horticulture through area expansion is gradually paving the path for enhanced productivity, eco-friendly production, safe and nutritionally rich produce, volume for processing, value — addition and value chain management, international competitiveness, intellectual property issues, sustaining production under changing climate etc… Despite several challenges and constraints, there are also successes in various sectors of horticulture. Different innovative technologies including improved varieties for higher productivity, high nutritive value, short season, dwarf plant types, efficient production technologies, making conservative use of water and other input resources etc. have been developed. Hi-tech horticulture technologies are available and successful resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses and a number of production clusters have emerged in different crops. Technologies for reduction of biotic and abiotic stresses in several horticulture crops have become popular and affordable by farmers/producers. The need of hour is to ensure creation of environment, conducive to promote healthy growth of the Horticulture Sector through proactive involvement of different stakeholders. Taking into consideration the enormous potential of horticulture, it is pertinent to assess the progress achieved and identify gaps, which are inhibiting its growth. This process will help in taking stock of development, the key constraints and challenges.
